Kidlington look to bounce back from defeat, as Thame United visit Yarnton Road to play their rearranged New Year’s Day fixture.

Words by Sam Rathbone

Overview
Kidlington return to Yarnton Road to regain some mid-season confidence against high-flying Thame, after their narrow 1-0 defeat to Biggleswade at The Eyrie on Saturday. The only goal of the game came from defender Patrick McCafferty just after half an hour played, securing all three points for the hosts to maintain their playoff hopes this season. Kidlington ensured the score stayed at 1-0 as Charlie Barnett made several saves to keep the Greens in the game.

After the Greens were narrowly defeated Saturday, Kidlington will be pumped up and ready to give their all against Thame who find themselves in 6th Place, just outside the playoffs. The away side have won just once in their last five away games beating Beaconsfield 1-0 away the best part of two months ago. Thame confidently come to Yarnton Park off the back of a dominant 3-1 home win against North Leigh, who have only picked up one win all season sitting bottom of the Southern League Table with Jack Tutton, Tom McElroy and Ty Deacon scoring for the Red Kites.

What looks to be a fast-paced thriller from both sides will turn out to be an unmissable one as Kidlington welcome Thame United to Yarnton Road this evening.

Recent Form

Kidlington – LLWDL
Kidlington's winless run continued into mid-December after only picking up one point away at Ware (1-1), since their last win against Enfield on the 16th of November last year.

Since then, they have faced opponents all over the table. Firstly, they travelled to Northwood, where they were outclassed in a six-pointer, losing 3-0.

Kiddy then hosted promotion candidates Berkhamsted at Yarnton Road and after going one-nil down, Kidlington hung in the game and managed to grab an equaliser through Charlie Bacon to give the Greens momentum going into the second half. However, it was the Visitors who pushed on in the second half scoring three more goals to give Berko an impressive 1-4 victory at Yarnton Road.

Boxing Day football was next up for Kiddy as they faced their fierce rivals North Leigh at Eynsham Park. Conor Taylor opened the scoring for the Greens before Nathan Opoku added another to extend the lead. North Leigh was awarded and scored a penalty late on before Kidlington made it three to wrap up a festive derby day against the Millers (1-3).

Then to complete 2024, The Greens hosted Beaconsfield Town and gained a defensively well earnt point to keep their survival hopes alive going into 2025 with a scoreless game at Yarnton Road.

The weather played a big role in the opening month’s games as Kiddy’s most recent game played was away against an inform Biggleswade, who had two back-to-back wins before facing the Greens and continued their winning momentum as they beat Kidlington due to a McCafferty header in the 32nd minute.

Thame United – WLDLW
After a rough patch at the start of the season, Thame picked up their first win of the season against Enfield in Matchweek 3. Since then, Thame have been consistently picking up points and climbing the table up into sixth place. We are now over halfway through the season and Thame’s last five results have presented a mixed bag. Starting with a 1-0 home win over Leighton Town, 2-0 away defeat to high-flying Berkhamsted and a goalfest against Welwyn Garden City earnt the Red Kites a valuable point.

An attempt to close the gap between those above in the play-off race, they fell short against 4th placed Hadley, losing 3-0 just 8 days ago. However, most recently, they’ve put it behind them following a dominant display to breeze past North Leigh at Meadow View Park, winning 3-1. They remain hopeful of picking up their away form to improve their position in the league and attempt to solidify themselves into the playoffs.
